American Jewish World Service (AJWS) is an international development organization motivated by Judaism's imperative need to pursue justice. AJWS is dedicated to alleviating poverty, hunger and disease among the people of the developing world regardless of race, religion or nationality. Through grants to grassroots organizations, volunteer service, advocacy and education, AJWS fosters civil society, sustainable development and human rights for all people, while promoting the values and responsibilities of global citizenship within the Jewish community.
Absolute Travel's General Manager, Leslie Overton, says, "From global poverty to gender issues, AJWS is on the frontlines to create change and make an impact on an international level. What strikes me in particular about their work is AJWS's dedication to visit their causes on-site to learn about the issues firsthand, in person. Absolute Travel is honored to be a link in the process."
Absolute Travel facilitates donor trips for American Jewish World Service to their project sites all over the world including Ghana, Bolivia, Ethiopia and Liberia. The June 2012 journey to Liberia was partly inspired by Leymah Gbowee, Nobel Peace Prize winner and AJWS grantee, Women Peace and Security Network-Africa, a particularly profound experience for women interested in witnessing Liberia's female-led transformation. We have also donated deluxe journeys to auction off at AJWS benefits, in which 100% of the proceeds go towards their mission. AJWS Board Chair and Absolute Travel client, Barbara Dobkin, comments, "I cannot yet tell people about the trip in a way that translates the emotional impact it had on me, and perhaps I never will. But I will continue to find ways to articulate our journey. To all of you – deep thanks for each person's trust and contributions. What an incredible group."
