Push Pull Cambodia believes in possibilities. Through colloboration, creation, and community they connect skilled Cambodian weavers and international markets. They use business as a tool to combat poverty, thereby creating opportunities and an environment where their Khmer Artisans will thrive. They seek like minded people to join their movement in creating opportunities for their community of artisans. Buying Push Pull Cambodia products provides long-term employment and an improved quality of life for their artisans and their families.
We were the first United States-based company to send Americans to Cambodia after the embargo was lifted in 1992, and the Kingdom of Wonder will always be a particularly special destination to us. Over the years we've been thrilled to witness a cultural revival of the arts in Cambodia, from Khmer folk dance to poetry.
In August 2010, when Push Pull Cambodia was still in its infancy, we connected with their cofounder Joellen Nicholson on the ground in Siem Reap. We learned of their mission to revive Ikat, one of the Khmer peoples' oldest forms of artistic expression, while also providing them a stable employment and reason to preserve this special technique, which has been based down orally from generation to generation of Cambodians. We loved this idea; the core of Absolute Travel has always been discovery – uncovering the deeper layers of a destination through a country’s history, its people and its present – and Push Pull Cambodia wove together all three. We particularly loved the idea of Khmer artisans connecting to the global community, while also working towards a project that made them even more proud of their country and its roots. We are thrilled to be a part of this wonderful project.
Cofounder Joellen says, "The talent and artistry of the Khmer Weaving Artisans is truly amazing. Weaving Ikat is very complex – it takes about 14 days to tie, dye, and spin one of our patterns before it even goes onto the loom. I am so proud to bring the beautiful work of some of the most talented Cambodians to the world and at the same time ensure they have a sustainable living. The Absolute Travel team has supported our work from the very beginning, demonstrating a strong interest of preserving this traditional Khmer art and the improving the livelihoods of the lives behind it."
