One&Only Reethi RahAll Maldives resorts occupy their own islands, but the One & Only Reethi Rah offers so many choices to guests that it feels more like its own mini-universe. Guests can choose from an overwater or beach villa -- many equipped with private pools -- and each is decorated in a sleek and elegant style. Three restaurants serve everything from western to Japanese and Middle Eastern cuisine -- Fanditha also doubles as a popular evening spot, where guests puff apple tobacco on Persian carpets beneath swaying palm trees. The spa is sleek with polished woods, fountains, and a range of treatments administered by impeccably trained professionals. After dinner, guests often assemble in the main open-air Rah Bar for cocktails and dancing; the magnificent view of the ocean is exactly what one expects from the Maldives. Indeed, Reethi Rah has so much to offer, and such an easy, comfortable elegance, that guests might be reluctant to leave this tropical paradise after several days of indulgence.

Banyan Tree Maldives VabbinfaruThe Banyan Tree resort in the Maldives occupies its own island, Vabbinfaru, which is located in a picturesque coral lagoon. The property carefully cultivates and protects the resulting sense of glorious isolation, offering a welcome respite from the modern world. Thatched roof villas have open terraces that offer spectacular views of the clear blue Indian Ocean, and the white talc sand of the beach is only a short stroll away. The Maldives region is renowned for its biodiversity, and over 900 species of fish mean excellent diving and snorkeling for guests, who have exclusive use of the beaches and surrounding waters. Rooms are decorated with indigenous artifacts, and Maldivian and international cuisine is available at the restaurant or can be served in your villa. Like all Banyan Tree properties, the spa is a highlight; it offers Eastern healing and relaxation techniques as well as European rejuvenation therapies. |

Cocoa Island Cocoa Island is nestled in the South Male Atoll, a less developed region of the Maldives. The diving off the coast of this remote island is excellent and the sleek resort is a minimalist fantasy. Though the décor might at first appear primitive and the landscaping a bit uncultivated, this is an intentional and well-crafted illusion that quickly fades upon closer inspection to reveal the care that has gone into each detail. All accommodation is situated along an offshore wooden walkway: the one- and two-bedroom water villas offer a private sundeck and direct access to the lagoon from the terrace, but the 30 Dhoni boat rooms are an equally attractive option. Named for the type of sailing vessels used by local fisherman, the Dhoni boat rooms literally float on the crystal water; from the wide platform bed, guests have an uninterrupted view of the ocean, and they can slip into the water from their private verandah. Shambhala ("center of peace and harmony"), the Cocoa Island spa and yoga space, takes a holistic approach to well-being, offering natural therapies as well as spiritual-based Asian healing techniques.

Huvafen Fushi With one of the first "underwater" spas in the world, the Huvafen Fushi is the Maldives' newest tribute to luxury and pampering. Located on its own island in the North Male Atoll, which has a magical lagoon of pristine blue water, the resort's 43 'naturally modern' bungalows combine contemporary design with traditional Maldivian style. Each of the bungalows has its own secluded freshwater pool along with amenities such as plasma screen televisions and top of the line sound systems and DVD players. The Aquum Spa provides a range of treatments in an "underwater setting" - the room is literally built below the surface of the water, and windows give glimpses of the aquatic life as you receive a treatment. The spa uses medicinal plants, herbs, seaweed extracts and oils. The resort also offers guests an opportunity to take a culinary expedition that combines wine, art, and music in it's own underground wine cellar restaurant.
