INTO THE WILD   12 days
Rio de Janeiro, Iguassu Falls, the Amazon, the Pantanal

With the vast and largely uninhabited Amazon and Pantanal regions within its borders, Brazil's biodiversity is truly impressive; this tour aims to give visitors a taste of this natural bounty. Start with three nights in Rio de Janeiro, where touring highlights include Corcovado and Sugar Loaf Mountains. Continue on to the awe-inspiring Iguassu Falls for two days; this series of 275 waterfalls straddles the borders of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay for almost 3 kilometers. Next fly to Manaus, located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, and spend three nights getting to know this mysterious world; highlights include a nighttime boat ride to spot Caimans with a flashlight and a daytime jungle walk to admire the colorful birds and the various trees and plant life. Take a boar ride to the "Meeting of the Waters," the point where the black Rio Negro and the light brown Rio Solimões run parallel for six kilometers without meeting. Next fly to the Pantanal, Brazil's giant wetlands region, where you will stay for three nights. This flood plain - as large as the state of Florida -- is teeming with wildlife. Take a boat ride along one of the many local rivers and look for the brightly colored macaws nesting on the nearby banks or spend the day hiking through the wilderness. The Pantanal has animals in such abundance that it is impossible not to encounter them while visiting - the question is which ones you'll see.
