Nearly 3,000 miles long but only 150 miles across at its widest point, Chile's long, thin shape contains a startling range of topography. In the north lies the impossibly dry Atacama Desert, while the south is rich with glaciers, jagged mountain peaks, pristine lakes, and dense forests. Nestled between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Chile has been relatively isolated throughout its history and, as a result, Chileans retain a strong sense of their rich culture and history.
