Fly to Lalibela for two nights; the rock-hewn churches in Lalibela have helped the city gain UNESCO World Heritage status. Explore many of these 12th century churches, including the famed cross-shaped Bieta Giorgis, and others nearby. Fly to the ancient city of Gondar, where impressive churches and castles are spectacularly nestled among the foothills of the Simien Mountains. During your two-night stay, tour the city's historical riches, including the magnificent Debre Birhan Selassie church, considered to be one of Ethiopia's loveliest examples of sacred architecture. Spend a full day exploring Simien National Park, whose grassy slopes lead to soaring massifs, which are permeated with deep gorges and rivers. Drive to Bahir Dar for two nights on the tranquil shores of Lake Tana. Tour the region's monasteries, famous for their frescoes and superb collections of icons and sacred manuscripts, and visit Tis Abay Falls, the source of the Blue Nile.
