Begin with a day of relaxation in Bali before embarking on your travel to Kalimantan, the Indonesian portion of Borneo. Fly to Yogyakarta and continue by road to Surabaya, with a visit to Borobudur. Continue on to Pangkalan Bun, the launch point for your boat trip upriver to the Rimba Lodge, the base for exploring the Tanjung Putting reserve. While here, visit Camp Leakey, one of the few remaining refuges for orangutans threatened by the diminishing rainforests. Return to Pangkalan Bun for your flight back to Yogyakarta. The next day fly to Balikpapan, the starting point for a cruise up the Mahakam River. Travel by houseboat to Tanjung Isau for a visit to a Dayak longhouse and then continue to Melak, where black orchids bloom after the rainy season. Visit the villages of Tering and Long Iram, which are replete with numerous Dayak tribal carvings. Return to Balikpapan for the flight to Bali, where three nights of rest and relaxation on Bali’s immaculate beaches awaits. |
