Nearly two weeks gives travelers ample time to see the famous highlights of Peru (Cusco, Machu Picchu, and the Sacred Valley) as well as some of the lesser known but equally compelling areas. Start with two nights in Lima and an introductory tour that will acquaint you with this modern capital city. From Lima, head to Arequipa, considered the second most important city in the country. Drive to Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world, to see the terraces and, if you’re lucky, Andean condors soaring above you. After a night in Colca, return to Arequipa, stopping at little villages and to see the cave paintings and lovely lagoons. From Arequipa, fly to Juliaca and continue by road to Puno, your base for two nights at Lake Titicaca. Take a boat ride to the famous Floating Islands of the Uros and visit Taquile Island to see the ancient weaving techniques. From Puno, hop aboard the Andean Explorer Train for a scenic journey to Cusco, where you will spend two nights strolling the cobblestone streets and learning about this charming colonial city. After a full day excursion to the Sacred Valley, take another scenic train ride to Machu Picchu and spend two nights at one of the world’s most fascinating ruins. |
