The beauty of Uganda once prompted Winston Churchill to proclaim it the "Pearl of Africa," and it remains an unspoiled land of wild natural beauty and the home to our favorite African resident, the heart pounding (literally and sentimentally!), Mountain Gorilla. A fertile oasis amid the arid highlands of East Africa, Uganda's national parks include lush rainforest, open savannah, and stunning mountain landscapes. While many travelers venture to Uganda for the sublime experience of viewing mountain gorillas in the wild, the country also has many other attractions for wildlife lovers – the tree-climbing lions of Queen Elizabeth National Park, the rainforests of Kibale National Park, world renowned bird watching in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and exotic boat rides along Lake Albert, to name a few. Uganda's cultural heritage also features prominently in our programs, with visits to local weaving co-operatives, traditional healers, and rural settlements in many itineraries. Neighboring Rwanda has made great strides in its recovery from its complicated past. The five extinct volcanoes of Virunga National Park not only offer surreal views and landscapes for trekking, but are also the residence to our gorilla friends. Trekking in Rwanda is generally less arduous, making it a good choice for those who would like to see mountain gorillas but would appreciate less strenuous hiking.
Please note: Gorilla trekking is a physically strenuous activity, during which visitors may spend from one to eight hours hiking through dense rainforest in an effort to see gorillas in their natural habitat. A reasonable degree of fitness and stamina is required for any programs that include gorilla trekking.
Costs are valid through December 31, 2011; holiday and peak season surcharges may apply.
